Dr Graham Shimmield

It is with great sadness that we must report that Dr Graham Shimmield, Chair of the INSITE Scientific Advisory Board (ISAB), lost his battle with cancer on 24 December 2016. Graham took over as Chair from Professor Ian Boyd in August 2013 and oversaw the development of the scientific objectives of the Programme, which led to the first call for papers in July 2014 and the current programme of research.

Graham’s understanding of the culture and needs of both the sponsors and the scientific community was vital in establishing a set of common goals upon which to build the unique INSITE governance model. The Programme would not be where it is today without Graham’s insight, energy and enthusiasm, which he gave generously, even throughout his illness.

Everyone who knew Graham will miss him enormously both as a colleague and a friend and all those involved in the INSITE programme send their sympathies to his family and many friends.

Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences is celebrating Graham’s life and dedicating its new student residence building in his honour on 12 May 2017.
